The Ministry of AYUSH was originally set up as a separate Department of Indian Systems of Medicine & Homoeopathy (ISM&H) in 1995 with the mandate, inter alia to formulate policies for development of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), their propagation and promotion within and outside the country.

The scheme has been vogue during the 9th, 10th & 11th plan and is continuing since then. Based on the experience of IEC activities in 9th, 10th & 11th plan and with a view to make the scheme more effective, the scheme was suitably in the year 2011. This has enabled the department to take up initiative like taking forward propagation and promotion of AYUSH system of medicine to all the states/UTs both in urban and rural areas with special thrust on North East & Hilly State.
