Institute is engaged in extension activities for propagation of knowledge on buffalo breeding, feeding, reproduction, health and management to the farmers through regular visits by the scientists/technical personnel to 10 adopted villages, organizing trainings, demonstrations, lectures, calf rallies and treatment camps etc.

Feed Resource Utilization and improvement has been the main research programme. The division has modern equipments like HPLC, GC, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, UV-visible Spectrometer, anaerobic chamber etc. Making best use of these facilities, studies have been undertaken on soil-plant-animal relationship, roughage utilization and improvement, rumen ecosystem and feed technology.

Genetic resources improvement programme is the major programme to undertake studies on genetic improvement of Murrah breed. Genetic improvement is targeted by implementing efficient breeding plans, envisaged with scientific breeding, using powerful computing systems maintaining large pedigrees of animals and vigilant technological interventions in the area of nutrition and reproduction. Genetic improvement is evaluated through associated herd and field progeny testing, performance recording and genetic analysis of data.
