The Rajya Sabha, India's upper house of Parliament, has up to 250 members-238 elected from States and Union Territories and 12 nominated by the President. It is a permanent body, with one-third of its members retiring every two years, each serving six-year terms.
The Lok Sabha, India's lower house of Parliament, comprises representatives elected by direct vote based on universal adult suffrage.
